The Devil You Know

"The Devil You Know" by Kit Rocha is book 2 in the Mercenary Librarians series, a postapocalyptic sci-fi/romance.

I may love this one as much as the first one, which is really rare for me. It does a great job of logically progressing the sci-fi plot, and the main romance is so sweet and caring.

It focused more on the librarian element and what they do for their community than on the action, which gives a whole different vibe to this book and provides a good counterbalance to the first installment. They did the same thing as the first book in leaving you with a last dun dun duuunn... to lead you in to the next book rather than a serious cliffhanger.

The style element of interspersing the chapters with corporate memos continued and also added journal entries (not from the main characters), and I still really enjoy it. Given the setting and that our characters basically have super powers, they aren't (and shouldn't be) what we know as normal, and while they are completely understandable and relatable, I think the addition of the memos from the people that "created" them help build a deeper understanding of the psychology of what they went through and how they came to be who they are.
